The Environmental Cost
of Computing
The average desktop computer with monitor requires at least 10 times its weight in fossil fuels and chemicals to manufacture, much more materials intensive than an automobile or refrigerator, which only require 1-2 times their weight in fossil fuels. Researchers found that
manufacturing one desktop computer and a monitor uses at least 240kg of fossil fuels, 22kg of chemicals
and 1,500kg of water - a total of 1.8 tonnes of
materials.
These Fat Clients (PCs) consume an immense amount of electricity, most of it is provided by burning fossil
fuels. This process emits pollutants, sulphur, and carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere causing respiratory
diseases, smog, acid rain, and global climate change.
From the largest scale (the earth) to the smaller scale of a classroom or an office, the environmental cost of today's Fat Client (PC) architecture is a huge and
growing problem that unfortunately remains largely
unaddressed and often unrecognised.
In addition to massive power use, tens of millions of Fat Clients (PCs) are disposed of in landfills and garbage dumps around the world contaminating the soil with toxic e-waste substances like mercury and cadmium.

Fat Clients (PCs) typically consume 110-200 watts of electricity. In
contrast, EntegrOS Smart Client consumes next to nothing. In fact, our e800 models consume 9 watts per added user and our e500 models only 5 watts per added user.
As an example, if you replaced 70 Fat Clients (PCs) with 10 Fat Clients (PCs) attached to 60 e800 EntegrOS Smart Clients, you would save about 10,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), which translates to over 1 metric ton of CO2 emissions per year.

A single Fat Client (PC) generates more heat than a 100 watt light bulb and they warm up very quickly. Most work areas with Fat Clients (PCs) almost always have to be air conditioned, raising capital expenditures to install them and electricity costs to run them.
In comparison, a room equipped with Fat Clients (PCs) and EntegrOS Smart Clients would generate 90% less heat and does not require additional air conditioning.
