What is EntegrOS Smart Client?
A Fat Client (typically a Fat Client (PC) or Laptop) carries out its processing activities itself. To do this it must have an
operating system and application software installed on it. Which means it needs a hard disk, a fan to cool the hard disk, an
operating system, applications software, anti-virus, anti-trojan and firewall software to protect the other software. All of this
hardware and software costs money.
A Thin Client depends primarily on a central server for its processing activities. It normally doesn't have CD-ROM drives,
disk drives or expansion slots so the hardware tends to be cheaper. Software is still needed however, typically Citrix
Software and/or Terminal Services software. As software as a service (SaaS) gains popularity, it is expected that Thin
Client will replace desktop Fat Clients (PCs) in many work and educational environments. In general, they are not as
vulnerable to malware attacks, have a longer life cycle, use less power and are less expensive to purchase.
EntegrOS Smart Client takes the principle of the Thin Client and extends it even further. It connects to a central server
just like a Thin Client but then our own Operating System is streamed to RAM with only the applications required to run.
No hard disk, no storage and no moving parts - so it is easy to deploy and maintain. It also consumes very little
power, without sacrificing functionality and processing takes place in the EntegrOS Smart Client.
How It Works
When you boot an EntegrOS Smart Client, the processor starts and then the BIOS sequence is executed. The BIOS
connects to a Network Adapter and broadcasts a message basically saying "Hi, I'm here!". Our central server hears and
recognises this message and initiates a connection sequence using the unique id of the EntegrOS Smart Client as part of
the security clearance.
Once the device is authenticated the kernel of EntegrOS Smart Client is streamed into RAM. You are in total control of
what the EntegrOS Smart Client can see or do.You may offer a desktop with access to an internet browser; give access
to Office facilities; run in Kiosk mode; or you might run one of your existing applications (whether it be Windows®, Unix® or Linux®). The point is you can do the entire above but without the cost.
Secure, Standards Compliant, Cloud Ready OS
EntegrOS is an operating system designed with compatibility, security and centralised computing in its DNA. With a built-in
Windows® Compatibility Layer, it runs many Windows® applications without requiring Microsoft Windows®. It's open
architecture integrates hardware of different manufacturers and unlike a thin client, allows you to connect hardware
peripherals just like a Fat Client(PC) - enabling VoIP, Conferencing etc.
Processing is done on the client and only the data is stored on the central server, allowing modern computing and access
to High Definition (HD) content without limitations.
For ultimate security the user has no access to the core operating system. Applications and software updates are
maintained and performed centrally on the server by a system administrator. With secure LAN and WAN boot architecture,
it is Cloud Computing ready.
