 | Hoyo De Monterrey Don Jose y Batet was a Spaniard who immigrated to Cuba at the age of thirteen, and worked for his uncle's plantation in Vuelta Abajo. In the 1850's Jose Gener opened a new factory in havana where he subsequently created a new brand called La Escepcion. It proved a success to Jose Gener and he used the capital gained to buy the Hoyo de Monterrey farm. Hoyo de Monterrey name roughly means "Valley of Monterrey," a particularly fertile site in the Vuelta Abajo, which had been farmed by Gener since at least 1860. The brand was registered in 1865.
It offers a very affable sweet and fragnant tobacco blends, a lighter flavour with soft and sweet style. The tobacco blend is creamy sweet, mild and aromatic. However, it lacks enough tannin and congeners to develop further depth and complexity beyond 15 to 20 years aging. The cigars do not need much aging and can taste brilliant when new. It comes in a wide range of sizes, the largest of which are much celebrated. It serves well to provide a choice of very pleasant smokes for people who have no time to age their cigars.
The Le Hoyo series cigars was introduced in 1970 and presents a stronger flavour, is signigificantly much more woody than regular Hoyo de Monterrey cigars, and they ages much better. |
