Jose L. Piedra
The Jose L. Piedra Factory was established in 1880 by its founder, Jose Lamadrid Piedra, a Spaniad from Asturia, Spain. This Jose L. Piedra brand became the most famous brand outside of Havana by end of the 19th century. Subsequently, Jose L. Piedra brand became a hit in the American market until the revolution began in 1961. With America the main market, the sales dropped drastically after the US embargo onto Cuba. The brand then became a popular in the domestic market, but eventually discontinued in the early 1990's. This Cuban cigar brand was resurrected in 1996, that used to be a popular brand for domestic consumption in Cuba. Now, Jose Piedra cigars are machine-made in Santa Clara. This brand continues to have very competitive pricing and is considered to have a mild-to-medium body with strong flavours. These are very robust cigars and taste quite tannic and bitter when new. After five years of aging, these traits are amazingly still very much the same, though no doubt some mellowing and a slightly sweeter taste are noticed. Because of their short history, and being machine-made, the long term aging potential is unclear. Definitely not for novices.
